Fluoroscopy

FUNCTIONAL IMAGING

Fluoroscopy is a study of moving body structures, such as digestive functions, in a live, movie-like sequence. It is a safe and non-invasive procedure. A contrast agent, called Barium, is used during fluoroscopy procedures to increases the visibility of organs or a specific area of concern. A Tower Saint John’s Imaging Radiologist watches the moving exam images on a television screen, and the Radiologist captures individual frames for interpretation.

Preparation for fluoroscopy depends on the type of exam that is performed. You may be instructed not to eat or drink anything for 8 – 12 hours prior to the exam, or to cleanse the large intestine with a prep kit given to you by your physician or our staff. Please contact us for exam-specific preparation instructions.

THE FLUOROSCOPY PROCEDURE

Depending on the type of fluoroscopic exam, you will be positioned next to the x-ray equipment standing up and/or lying down. You maybe asked to switch positions during the exam. Contrast agents used during a fluoroscopy exam may be introduced to the body through injections, swallowing, or in select cases, an enema.

FOLLOWING A FLUOROSCOPY PROCEDURE

Once the fluoroscopy study is complete, you may resume normal activity. Drinking fluids may be encouraged to help any contrast material move through the body. One of TSJI’s Radiologists will interpret the exam and report the findings to your physician. Your physician will contact you to discuss the results.
